Characteristics of a Worthy Walk
My friend David Rocker posts a “Walking with Rock” inspirational video every Monday-Friday morning. As he takes his morning walk, he invites us to walk with him as he shares inspiration and challenges us to grow mentally, physically and spiritually. He does a great job with his daily encouragement. I encourage you to sign up for his meaningful, moving video, and “keep it moving, people!”
Recently, working through our I Thessalonians series, we looked at another walk, “A Walk Worthy of God.” In I Thessalonians 2:11, Paul reminded the Thessalonian believers that he “charged” every one of them to do what?
Verse 12 says “that you would walk worthy of God . . .” In our message, we examined what it means to walk with God. Paul often used the word walk to describe living the Christian life. Four times he used it in his Thessalonian letters (I Thess. 4:1, 12; II Thess. 3:6, 11). We find this image used throughout his epistles as he gives instructions about the Christian life.
We said that walking with God carries at least five implications:
*Walking with God implies an intentional aim: Christlikeness.
*Walking with God implies effort and a desire for progress.
*Walking with God requires endurance.
*Walking with God results in communion.
*Walking with God calls for observing God’s ways.
This present tense command to walk means that walking is not an option but is the continuous practice of the growing believer. Walking with God is a lifestyle.
One additional question we didn’t get to in the sermon is “What are the characteristics of walking worthy of God?” How do we walk with God? Here’s a sampling:
*Walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7)
*Walk in truth (I John 1:4)
*Walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16, 25).
*Walk in love (Ephesians 5:2)
*Walk in good works prepared by God (Ephesians 2:10)
*Walk, bearing fruit in every good work (Colossians 1:10)
*Walk, increasing in the knowledge of God (Colossians 1:10)
*Walk, strengthened with all might (Colossians 1:11)
*Walk, giving thanks (Colossians 1:12)
*Walk as children of light (Ephesians 5:8)
*Walk in the light, as He is in the light (I John 1:7)
*Walk as Jesus walked (I John 2:6)
*Walk carefully and wisely (Ephesians 5:15)
How is your walk with God going today? Are you walking worthy of God?
